Our Philosophy
Health Built on Foundation, Not Band-Aids
Our vision is to address the full spectrum of health — integrating medicine, lifestyle, and balance into one cohesive system of care. We thoughtfully blend integrative, naturopathic, and conventional Western medicine, grounded in the principles of functional medicine.
Our Approach
What Is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is a root-cause-focused, systems-based approach to care. It is holistic in nature and centered on optimizing what we believe are the essential pillars of health.
Led by licensed clinicians — NPs, PAs, and MDs — we blend evidence-based medical care with practical tools across nutrition, supplementation, movement, mindset, and community, empowering patients to take an active role in their healing journey.
The Name
Why “Exergy”?
Coined in 1956 by physicist Zoran Rant from the Greek ex + ergon — meaning “from work” — exergy was one of the original goals of thermodynamics.
While energy measures quantity, exergy measures quality. Energy is the total capacity to do work. Exergy is the portion of energy that can be converted into useful work.
The metaphor is simple: finding equilibrium within your body allows for maximum output in your life.
“The maximum possible work that can be produced as a system is brought into equilibrium within its environment.”
Fun fact: The word was coined the same year both of our parents were born. Our dad teaches thermodynamics, our stepmom is a thermo pro, and our brother spans science, engineering, and healthcare. We even had a family sailboat named “Exergy.” It's like it was meant to be.
The Foundation
Five Pillars of Health
Listed in no particular order of priority, these are the essential pillars we believe form the foundation of long-term health and resilience.
Connection
Of all five pillars, this one tends to get the most resistance — especially among high performers. But connection is literally how we start life. It's foundational, not optional.
Why It Matters
In functional medicine, connection encompasses social bonds, personal relationships, and even your relationship with yourself. Strong family and social connections — big or small — are direct predictors of happiness and longevity. On the contrary, chronic isolation, tense relationships, and lack of meaningful connection are directly associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and early cognitive decline.
What Connection Looks Like in Practice
- Going to the same gym class consistently
- Weekly game night with friends
- Sitting down for family dinner
- A simple hug (knowing boundaries)
- Regular visits with family members
- A consistent date night
- A silent walk without headphones
- Disconnecting from screens
A Personal Note
In our home, we prioritize dinner together — sitting down and intentionally hearing about everyone's day. Personally, I take a short walk — 10 minutes max — without kids, without my husband. Just me. During that walk, I use what I call the 4-3-2-1 rule: identify 4 things you can see, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can feel, 1 thing you can smell. If you're a high performer, you might be surprised how hard it is to turn your brain off.
Real, healthy, regular connection directly impacts your health — especially your stress hormone cortisol. There is no wrong answer here, except avoidance. Build community. Nurture relationships. Create self-connection. Be intentional. Make it simple. Make it sustainable.
